Levante Unión Deportiva could face a financial penalty following incidents in their 3-3 draw with Sevilla at the Ciutat de València. Local fans threw plastic bottles and other objects onto the pitch in the 95th minute, after Isaac Romero scored a late equaliser for the visitors.

Referee Adrián Cordero Vega detailed the events in his match report. "In the 95th minute, after the 2-3 goal by number 16 Isaac Romero and following the celebration described in the previous section, fans of the local club identified by the colour of their shirts threw a multitude of plastic bottles, cups and other objects into the goal celebration area without any of them hitting anyone," he wrote. The official then activated the first step of the protocol for thrown objects, making a stadium announcement before play resumed.

The provocation and the sending-off

The root of the crowd's reaction was Romero's own celebration. The Sevilla forward was shown a second yellow card and sent off for making a silencing gesture with his index finger towards the home supporters, an action the referee deemed provocative. Social media images showed that, contrary to the initial report, at least one bottle did hit a group of Sevilla players and another struck Juan Iglesias on the leg.

Sevilla manager Luís García later confirmed he was hit by an object. "You have to identify those people who throw a bottle, here (in Valencia), in Seville or in any stadium," he stated in a press conference.

Consequences and context

The Granota club is exposed to a fine of up to 602 euros for a minor offence, as the official report did not record any impacts. This episode tarnishes a thrilling draw that leaves Levante in 17th place in La Liga, with 6 points from seven games. The team showed character by coming from behind twice, with goals from Iván Romero, Adrián de la Fuente and Ifeanyi Ndukwe in added time.

The incident adds to the disturbances registered hours before the match, where nearly a hundred ultras from both clubs were involved in a brawl. Levante must now focus on their next fixture, a tough trip to Riazor to face eighth-placed Deportivo La Coruna. All the information on the upcoming match is on our fixtures page.
